Privacy Policy

Margin finds near-identical photos, dead screenshots, and duplicate files so you can clear them out. Everything it does — reading your library, comparing images, deleting what you choose — happens on the device you're using. This page explains exactly what that means.

What Margin accesses

With your permission, and only for the comparisons it needs to make.

Photos library — read to find near-duplicates, screen recordings, screenshots, and files safe to compress or remove. Thumbnails, file sizes, dates, and technical metadata only.
Desktop, Documents, Downloads (Mac only) — scanned separately, with its own permission prompt, for byte-identical duplicate files.

Margin does not read message content, browsing history, contacts, or anything outside the folders and libraries you explicitly grant it access to.

What Margin never does

No exceptions, because there's no code path that could do any of this.

No internet connection — Margin has no network code at all. There is nothing to send your photos to.
No analytics or crash reporting — no third-party SDKs of any kind.
No account or login — nothing to sign in to, nothing stored about you server-side.
No sharing — your photos, files, and metadata never leave the device, so there's nothing to share, sell, or transmit.

Deletions are reversible

Margin never permanently erases anything on your behalf.

Photos you remove are moved to your device's Recently Deleted album, exactly as if you'd deleted them yourself in Photos — recoverable until you empty that album. Files removed on Mac are moved to the Trash, not deleted outright.

Anything you've favorited, edited, or filed into an album is treated as protected and held back from every deletion suggestion — Margin only ever offers to remove what you haven't already acted on.

Local storage

A small amount of information stays on your device, never anywhere else.

Margin stores your compression thresholds, which items you've already compressed, and how much storage you've freed over time, using UserDefaults. This is removed automatically if you delete the app.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it.

Given Margin has no network access, any future update would still describe an app that works entirely on-device — that design choice isn't expected to change.
